Round or rectangular is one of the biggest decisions when choosing a dining table. Both work beautifully in the right room. Here is how to decide.
Round dining tables
- Sociable: everyone can see and talk to each other.
- Space-saving: no corners, so they suit smaller rooms, square spaces and breakfast nooks.
- Family-friendly: no sharp corners for small children.
- Best for: two to four people, or up to six with a larger table.
A 120cm round table comfortably seats four. Pedestal bases make it easier to fit chairs around a round table because there are no legs in the way.
Rectangular dining tables
- Seat more people: the best choice for six, eight, ten or more.
- Suit long rooms: ideal for open-plan and narrow dining areas.
- Classic look: works with almost any style.
What about oval?
Oval tables combine the seating of a rectangle with the softer flow of a round table, so they suit busy rooms where people walk past often.
How to decide
- Measure your room and leave about 90cm around the table for chairs and walkways.
- Count how many people you seat every day, and how many you seat at special occasions.
- Match the shape to the room: round for square rooms, rectangular or oval for long rooms.
