Living room
- Front legs on: the most common choice. The rug sits under the front legs of the sofa and chairs, connecting the seating group.
- All legs on: in larger rooms, a rug big enough for all furniture to sit on fully creates a luxurious zone.
- Leave a border of floor visible around the rug, roughly 30 to 45cm from the walls.
- For a corner or chaise sofa, the rug should reach at least under the front edge of both sections.
Dining room
The rug should extend at least 60cm beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
- Round tables: use a round rug or a square rug about 120cm wider than the table.
- Rectangular and oval tables: use a rectangular rug matching the table’s shape.
Materials
Jute and wool suit living rooms; low-pile and flat weaves are easiest under dining chairs.
