What Is Clearance Furniture? Brand-New Excess and Discontinued Stock Explained

Clearance furniture is not second-hand. Here is what excess stock, discontinued lines and ex-display really mean, and how to shop clearance with confidence.

When people hear “clearance furniture” they sometimes picture worn, second-hand pieces. At Mentone Furniture Clearance Centre that is not what it means. Everything we sell online is brand new in the box. Here is how clearance works and why the prices are so much lower than retail.

Excess stock

Furniture brands and retailers order stock months in advance. When they order more than they sell, or need to free up warehouse space for new ranges, the extra stock has to go somewhere. That excess stock is brand new, never used, and usually still in its original packaging.

Discontinued lines

Every season, ranges are updated: a new colour replaces an old one, a frame is redesigned, or a collection is retired. The remaining pieces of the old range become discontinued lines. There is nothing wrong with them; they are simply no longer part of the current catalogue.

Ex-display

Ex-display furniture has been used on a showroom floor. At our store, any ex-display items can only be found on our shop floor in Cheltenham, not online. If you love a bargain, it is worth visiting in person.

Why is clearance furniture cheaper?

Clearance centres buy stock in bulk when brands need to move it quickly. That means we can sell high-end furniture at up to 80% off RRP. The trade-off is choice: quantities are limited, colours and configurations vary, and once an item sells out it is usually gone for good.

Tips for shopping clearance furniture

  • Measure first. Check the measurements in the product photos and measure your room and doorways. See how to measure for furniture delivery.
  • Do not wait too long. Popular pieces sell quickly, and restocks are not guaranteed.
  • Visit the showroom. Sit on sofas, feel fabrics and see colours in real light.
  • Check the details. Note whether a corner sofa is LHF or RHF, and whether a dining set includes all the chairs you need.
  • Ask about delivery. Our delivery starts from $40 and is priced by distance, with extra fees above ground floor.

Is clearance furniture worth it?

If you want quality furniture without paying full retail, yes. You get the same brand-new pieces sold elsewhere at a fraction of the price, as long as you are flexible on exact colours and quick to decide. Browse our special offers to see the biggest markdowns right now.
