There is nothing worse than a new sofa stuck in the hallway. A few minutes with a tape measure before you buy will save a lot of stress on delivery day.
What you need
- A tape measure
- The product measurements (we show these in the product photos)
- Your phone, to note down measurements and take photos of tight spots
Step 1: Measure the furniture
Note the width, depth and height of the piece. For sofas, also note the back height and arm height. For corner sofas and dining sets, check whether the item arrives in separate pieces or boxes.
Step 2: Measure every entry point
Measure the width and height of each doorway the furniture must pass through, with the door fully open. Remember that door handles, hinges and security screens can reduce the usable width. If the doorway is tight, measure the diagonal too.
Step 3: Measure hallways and corners
Measure the width of any hallway, and look closely at tight turns. Large items are usually carried on their side or on end and turned into rooms, so a narrow hallway with a sharp turn can be harder than a narrow door.
Step 4: Check stairs and lifts
For stairs, measure the width, the ceiling height above the stairs, and any landings or turns. For apartments, measure the lift door and the inside of the lift, including the diagonal, and check whether your building needs a lift booking for deliveries. Let us know about stairs when you order, as extra fees apply above ground floor.
Step 5: Plan the room
Clear a path, move fragile items, and decide exactly where the piece will go so it can be placed straight away.
