If you entertain a few times a year but do not need a huge table every day, an extendable dining table could be the answer. Here is what to know.
How extendable tables work
Extendable tables have one or more leaves that add length when needed. Some slide apart with a leaf that drops in, others have leaves that fold out from underneath. Check the product details for how the mechanism works.
The pros
- Space-saving: keep the table compact for everyday meals.
- Flexible: seat extra guests for birthdays, Christmas and dinner parties.
- Great for smaller homes: no need to fit a large table permanently.
The cons
- The extension mechanism needs a little care.
- Some extensions show a slight join line.
- You need space for the extended length plus chair room.
What to check
- Both lengths: measure your room for the extended size, leaving about 90cm around the table.
- Seating: allow around 60cm of table edge per person at each length. See our dining table size guide.
- Leg position: legs at the corners or a central base change how many chairs fit.
- Matching chairs: you may want extra chairs stored elsewhere for when the table is extended.
Buy it as a set
An extendable dining set includes coordinated chairs and is often the best value. Or choose a table from our dining tables and add chairs separately.
