A fabric sofa gets more use than almost anything else in the house. A little regular care keeps it looking fresh for years. Here is a simple routine.
Step 1: Check the care label
Look for the cleaning code on the label under the cushions or base. Common codes include W (water-based cleaners are fine), S (solvent-based cleaners only), WS (either), and X (vacuum only, no liquids). Always follow the label.
Step 2: Vacuum weekly
Use an upholstery attachment to remove dust, crumbs and pet hair. Get into the crevices and under the cushions. Regular vacuuming stops dirt working into the fibres.
Step 3: Plump and rotate cushions
Plump seat and back cushions and rotate or flip them, if they are designed to be, so they wear evenly.
Step 4: Treat spills straight away
- Blot with a clean, dry, white cloth. Never rub, as this pushes the spill deeper.
- Work from the outside of the stain inwards.
- If the label allows water, dab with a little lukewarm water and mild detergent, then blot dry.
- Spot test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
Step 5: Deep clean when needed
For a full refresh, consider a professional upholstery cleaner, especially for large sofas or delicate fabrics. Removable covers should only be washed if the label says so.
Step 6: Protect it day to day
- Keep the sofa out of strong direct sunlight to reduce fading.
- Use throws if you have pets or young children.
- Avoid sitting on the arms, which can stretch the fabric.
