Side tables and console tables are small pieces that make a big difference. They add surface space, lighting spots and a finished look to a room.
Side tables
Where they go: at the end of a sofa, beside an armchair, or next to a bed.
Height: a side table works best at about the height of the sofa or chair arm, or a little lower, so it is easy to reach a drink or book.
Size: choose a compact table in a small space, or a pair of side tables either side of a large sofa for balance.
Console tables
Where they go: in an entryway or hallway, behind a floating sofa, or under a wall-mounted TV.
Size: keep it slim enough to leave a clear walkway. Behind a sofa, a console table should be no taller than the sofa back.
How to style them
- Use the rule of three: group items in threes, with different heights, such as a lamp, a plant and a small stack of books.
- Add a lamp: layered lighting makes a room feel warm.
- Use a tray: to corral keys, remotes and small items.
- Leave space: a clear surface looks calmer and is more useful.
- Use the space below: baskets or stools under a console table add storage.
Mixing finishes
Side tables do not need to match your coffee table exactly. Keep one element consistent, such as timber tone or black legs, so the room feels connected.
