An ottoman is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can own. It can be a footrest, a spare seat, a coffee table alternative or a place for a tray of drinks. Here is how to choose one.
Ways to use an ottoman
- Footrest: put your feet up in front of a sofa or armchair.
- Extra seating: handy when guests visit, then tucks away.
- Coffee table alternative: add a tray to create a stable surface.
- Bedroom or dressing area: somewhere to sit while getting ready.
Size and height
For a footrest, choose an ottoman about the same height as your sofa seat or slightly lower. For a coffee table alternative, choose a larger ottoman and leave about 40 to 45cm between it and the sofa.
Shape
- Round: soft and easy to move around, ideal for small spaces.
- Square or rectangular: more surface area for trays and feet.
Fabric and colour
Choose a fabric that coordinates with your sofa rather than matching it exactly. Grey, beige and textured fabrics are versatile. If you are adding texture, consider bouclé. See what is bouclé?
Where to place it
Place an ottoman in front of an armchair to create a reading corner, at the end of a chaise, or opposite a corner sofa to balance the room. Read how to style a living room around a corner sofa.
