Dining Chair Buying Guide: Comfort, Materials and Spacing

Upholstered, timber or rattan? How to choose dining chairs that are comfortable, practical and the right size for your table.

Dining chairs get used every day, so comfort and practicality matter as much as looks. Whether you are buying chairs to go with a new table or refreshing an existing dining room, here is what to consider.

Comfort first

A comfortable dining chair supports your back and lets your feet rest flat on the floor. Look for a seat depth that suits the people using it, a backrest with a gentle curve, and enough padding for long dinners. Curved, upholstered backrests are a popular choice for comfort and style.

Choosing a material

  • Upholstered fabric: soft and inviting, available in many colours and textures, including bouclé. Best for households that are happy to deal with spills promptly.
  • PU or faux leather: easy to wipe clean, which makes it practical for families with young children.
  • Timber: durable and timeless. Add a seat cushion for extra comfort.
  • Rattan and woven: light, textural and perfect for coastal and relaxed interiors.

Get the height right

Allow about 25 to 30cm between the top of the chair seat and the underside of the tabletop. Standard dining tables are around 75cm high, so most dining chairs have a seat height of roughly 45 to 48cm. If you are choosing chairs for a kitchen bench instead, you need stools; see our bar stool height guide.

How many chairs fit?

Allow about 60cm of table edge per chair, and a little more for chairs with arms or wide backs. Check that chairs can slide fully under the table when not in use, especially in smaller rooms.

Matching your chairs and table

Matching sets give a clean, coordinated look. For something more personal, pair a timber table with upholstered chairs, or a black table with neutral fabric chairs for contrast. Keep at least one element consistent, such as leg colour or fabric tone, so the look feels intentional.
