LHF vs RHF Corner Sofas Explained

Left-hand facing or right-hand facing? A simple way to work out which corner sofa or chaise configuration suits your room.
San Remo LHF Beige Fabric Corner Sofa | Modern L-Shaped Lounge

If you are shopping for a corner sofa or chaise lounge, you will see the letters LHF and RHF in product names. Ordering the wrong one is a common and frustrating mistake, so here is how to get it right.

What LHF and RHF mean

LHF stands for left-hand facing and RHF stands for right-hand facing. The direction is described as if you are standing in front of the sofa, facing it.

  • LHF: the chaise or corner is on your left as you face the sofa.
  • RHF: the chaise or corner is on your right as you face the sofa.

The confusion usually comes from people imagining themselves sitting on the sofa, which flips left and right. Always picture yourself standing and looking at it.

How to choose the right side for your room

  1. Find the focal point. Most people want the chaise facing the TV or the best view.
  2. Check the walkways. The chaise should not block a doorway, hallway or sliding door.
  3. Look at windows and heaters. Avoid placing the long end hard against a heater or in the way of curtains.
  4. Stand where the sofa will face from. Facing the spot where the sofa will sit, decide whether the corner should be on your left (LHF) or right (RHF).

Tape it out

Use painter’s tape on the floor to mark the full footprint, including the chaise. Walk around it, open doors and check sight lines before you buy.

What about modular sofas?

Some modular sofas let you swap the chaise to either side, which is handy if you move house. Check the product details, because many corner sofas are fixed configurations.
