A corner sofa is the anchor of a living room. Get the layout and styling right, and the whole room feels comfortable and pulled together.
Start with placement
Corner sofas usually sit best against two walls or float in an open-plan space to create a clear living zone. Keep the open side facing the room so it feels welcoming, and make sure the chaise does not block a doorway or walkway. Not sure which side the chaise should go? See LHF vs RHF explained.
Choose the right rug
Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa to sit on it. A rug that is too small makes a big sofa look like it is floating.
Pick a coffee table that is easy to walk around
Round and oval coffee tables work especially well with corner sofas because there are no corners to bump into. Leave about 40 to 45cm between the table and the sofa. Read our coffee table guide.
Add side tables and lighting
Place a side table at the open end of the sofa for drinks and a lamp. Layer lighting with a floor lamp in the corner and a table lamp so the room feels warm at night.
Soften with cushions and throws
Use cushions in two or three coordinating colours and different textures. Odd numbers often look more relaxed. A throw over the chaise adds warmth and protects the fabric.
Balance the room
A large sofa can feel heavy on one side of a room. Balance it with artwork, a tall plant, shelving or an ottoman on the opposite side.
